Sodium perborate monohydrate is used to prevent infections.
Sodium perborate is an oxidative preservative that is used inGenteal lubricating eye drops.
Sodium perborate monohydrate is a white powder and a boron compound, which hydrolyzes to hydrogen peroxide and boron.
Sodium perborate is an oxidative preservative that is used inGenteal lubricating eye drops. With topical application, sodium perborate is converted by catalase to water, oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide. Its antimicrobial properties are attributed to oxidization of cell membranes, membrane-bound enzymes, and disruption of protein synthesis.
Major & minor side effects for Sodium perborate monohydrate
- Irritating to mucous membranes, eyes and skin.
- Nose and throat irritation.
- At high concentrations, cough.
- Eyes watering, redness.
- Risk of temporary eye lesions.
- Risk of dermatitis.
Boric acid, a conversion product of sodium perborate in biological systems, is poorly absorbed through intact skin, but is absorbed through abraded, denuded or burned skin leading to systemic effects similar to ingestion.
Ingestion:
• Severe irritation of the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach.
• Bloating of stomach, belching.
Target Organs: Large doses of boric acid have been shown to be toxic to most organs including central nervous system, reproductive system (testes and developing fetus), liver and kidneys.
