Saxagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor which is used in combination with diet and exercise in the therapy of type 2 diabetes, either alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. It also signals the liver to stop producing sugar when there is too much sugar in the blood.

• Saxagliptin works in part by increasing the amount of insulin produced by your body.
• It also reduces the amount of a substance called glucagon being produced by your pancreas. 

• Joint pain,
• Unusual skin blisters,
• Signs of heart failure (such as shortness of breath, swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain).

• This medicine does not help patients who have insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetes.
• Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.
• Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
• Alcohol, Gallstones, history of Hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides or fats in the blood) or Pancreatitis, Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, arms, or legs), Heart failure, history of or Kidney disease—May increase risk for heart failure.
