Side Effects
- Phenol and its vapors are corrosive and toxic to the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract.
- Phenol is also very toxic to neurons and if injected into the blood stream can lead to instant death by blocking the neural transmission system.
- Phenol is corrosive and causes severe chemical burns on contact.
- Systemic effects can occur from all routes of exposure and may include convulsions, sudden collapse, coma, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, profuse sweating, hypotension, arrhythmia, pulmonary edema, and tachycardia.
Precautions / Concerns
- Phenol should be used with adequate ventilation to minimize inhalation.
- Prevent contact with skin by wearing neoprene gloves, lab coat, and chemical resistant apron.
- Wear chemical splash goggles if splashing may occur, such as during dispensing, heating or transferring phenol.
