Benzalkonium Chloride

Benzalkonium chloride is used as an antiseptic agent in ophthalmic preparations, skin care products, contact lens solutions, etc.

It is also used in medications for the relief of burns, cuts, local swelling of the skin and the mouth.

Uses

Benzalkonium Chloride works as aantiseptic and preservative that helps prolong shelf life of medicines.

Major & minor side effects for Benzalkonium chloride

  • Severe skin rash and hives
  • Blistering and peeling of skin
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • Signs and symptoms of infection

Precautions / Concerns

This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless necessary.

Benzalkonium chloride may interact with many other medicines and may cause adverse effects.

This medicine is not recommended for use in children less than 2 years of age unless prescribed by the pediatrician.

This medicine is not recommended for use in case of severe burns or cuts since the risk of severe skin irritation is significantly high.     

This medicine is not recommended for use in case of animal bites and deep puncture wounds since the risk of severe skin irritation is significantly high.

This medicine is not recommended for use if a large area of the skin is to be treated. 

Salicylic Acid
  • Salicylic acid is a keratolytic (peeling agent). Salicylic acid causes shedding of the outer layer of skin.
  • It treats pimples (acne) by penetrating into the skin and killing acne-causing bacteria. It additionally reduces oil production in the skin, replenishes acne-prone skin, and it also keeps your pores open.

 

Uses

Salicylic acid topical (for the skin) is used in the treatment of acne, dandruff, seborrhea, or psoriasis, and to remove corns, calluses, and warts.

Side Effects
  • Skin irritation,
  • Hypersensitivity,
  • Dry skin,
  • Erythema (skin redness)

 

Precautions / Concerns
  • This medicine should not be used to treat genital warts, warts on the face, warts with hair growing from them, warts in the nose or mouth, moles, or birthmarks.
  • It makes your skin sensitive towards sunlight. Use protective measures like sunscreen or wear protective clothing. 
  • Inform your doctor if you notice unusual dryness, redness and peeling of the skin.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or irritated skin.
Coal Tar

Coal tar belongs to a class of drugs known as keratoplastics. It works by causing the skin to shed dead cells from its top layer and slow down the growth of skin cells. This effect decreases scaling and dryness. Coal tar can also decrease itchiness from these skin conditions.

Uses

Coal tar topical (for the skin) is used to treat the skin symptoms of psoriasis, including dryness, redness, flaking, scaling, and itching. Coal tar is not a cure for psoriasis, and it will provide only temporary relief of skin symptoms.

Side Effects

Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe stinging,
  • burning,
  • swelling
  • other irritation of the treated skin.
  • photosensitivity

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: 

  • hives
  • difficult breathing
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

 

Precautions / Concerns
  • If this medicine is used on the scalp, it may temporarily discolor blond, bleached, or tinted hair.
  • Coal tar may stain the skin or clothing. Avoid getting it on your clothing. The stain on the skin will wear off after you stop using the medicine.
