Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a dietary supplement used when the amount of calcium taken in the diet is not enough. Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart. Calcium carbonate also is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. It is available with or without a prescription.
Uses

- It is an antacid that works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach.
Side Effects
- Constipation, gas, and burping may occur.
- Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
- Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, unusual weight loss, bone/muscle pain, mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion), headache, increased thirst/urination, unusual weakness/tiredness.
Precautions / Concerns
- Before taking calcium carbonate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as milk or dairy products found in some brands), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
- If you have any of the following health problems, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication: highypercalcemia, intestinal blockage, kidney disease (such as kidney stones).
- Some products may contain aspartame. If you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition that requires you to restrict your intake of aspartame (or phenylalanine), consult your doctor or pharmacist about using this drug safely.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication.
- This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Sodium Chloride
Uses
Used to treat hypovolemic shock, hypernatremia, electrolyte imbalance.
Side Effects
Dry eyes, dry mouth, thirst, fever, fluid retention.
Precautions / Concerns
Avoid if patients are allergic to Sodium chloride. Consult with your physician during pregnancy & lactation.
Polyethylene Glycol
Polyethylene Glycol works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis,
which makes the stool soft and easier to pass. It also helps clean out the intestines
prior to medical procedures or examination.
Uses
- This medicine is used to relieve occasional constipation by softening the stools. It is also used before certain medical procedures to empty the bowels.
- This medicine can also be found in a number of other products including skin creams, eye lubricants, food additives, etc. It prevents dry and hard stools and allows for easy passage of stools.

Precautions / Concerns
- This medicine may cause severe adverse effects such as a severe or bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding, blood in stools, worsening abdominal pain, etc. in some patients.
- This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients suffering from electrolyte abnormalities due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient's condition.
- This medicine is not recommended for use for more than 1 week due to the increased risk of dependence.
- This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients with a history of kidney diseases due to the increased risk of severe adverse effects. It should be used only when the risks outweigh the benefits and only under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Sodium Bicarbonate
Uses
Used to relieve heartburn and acid indigestion.
Side Effects
Gas, stomach cramps, increased thirst, loss of appetite, weakness, irritability, bloody urine and legs swelling.
Precautions / Concerns
Avoid if patients are hypersensitive to Sodium Bicarbonate. Patients with alkalosis, congestive heart failure and rectal bleeding should not take sodium bicarbonate.
Potassium Chloride
Uses
Used to treat & prevent hypokalemia, electrolyte imbalance.
Side Effects
Chest pain, stomach pain, flatulence, diarrhea, rash, itching, swelling.
Precautions / Concerns
Avoid in patients with high potassium concentration, renal failure, systemic acidosis, acute dehydration & adrenal insufficiency.
