Homatropine ophthalmic (for the eyes) is used to treat an eye condition called uveitis.
This medicine is also used to dilate your pupil before an eye exam, or to lower pressure inside the eye after eye surgery.
Homatropine is used to dilate or enlarge the pupil of the eye so that the doctor can examine the back of the eyeball. It may also be used to reduce pain in certain eye conditions.
Major & minor side effects for Homatropinehydrobromide
- Transient burning sensation of the eyes
- Transient stinging sensation of the eyes
- Increased sensitivity of the eyes to light
- Local irritation
- Redness in and around the eyes
- Swelling around the eyes
- Increased thirst
- Dryness of mouth
- Discharge from eyes
This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless necessary.
Report to your doctor about personal or family history of glaucoma before the treatment with this medicine is initiated.
Use of this medicine may cause blurred vision in some patients.
Use of this medicine may make your eyes more sensitive to light.
This medicine should be used with caution in the elderly patients since the likelihood of severe adverse effects is significantly high.
This medicine is not recommended for use in infants less than 3 months of age since the safety and efficacy of use are not clinically established.
Use of this medicine in excess in pediatric patients and in certain individuals with a history of susceptibility to belladonna alkaloids (atropine, hyoscyamine, scopolamine, etc.) may cause systemic symptoms of homatropine poisoning.
This medicine should be used with caution in patients with Down’s syndrome due to the increased risk of angle closure glaucoma.
This medicine should be used with caution in patients with keratoconus.
