Loperamide is an anti-diarrhoeal medication. It works by slowing down the
contraction of the intestines thereby decreasing the speed at which the contents
pass through it. This allows more time for reabsorption of fluids and nutrients,
making the stools more solid and less frequent.
It is used to relieve the symptoms of diarrhea that start suddenly and lasts for a few
days. It is also used to treat long-term diarrhea associated with other diseases.
It should not be used in patients with dysentery (diarrhea with blood).
Loperamide is also used in people who have undergone an ileostomy (an operation
that removed part of the bowel), to thicken your stool and reduce the amount of
output from your ileostomy.
