This medicine may also slow the progression of damage to the body from active arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
It may also be used to treat a condition known as ankylosing spondylitis.
Etanercept is also used in children 2 years of age and older for juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
It is also used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in patients 4 years of age and older.
Etanercept blocks the action of certain chemical messengers that are responsible for inflammation, swelling and redness associated with certain joint diseases.

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with active serious infections.
- This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless necessary.
- Etanercept may interact with many other medicines and may cause severe adverse effects.
- Use of this medicine may affect the immune system making you susceptible to opportunistic infections from a wide variety of pathogens.
- Use of this medicine may increase the risk of reactivation of hepatitis b virus in patients who are chronic carriers.
- Use of this medicine may cause neurological problems and exacerbate the symptoms of nervous system disorders.
- Use of this medicine has been associated with worsening of congestive heart failure and new onset in some rare cases.
- Use of this medicine may cause blood cell component disorders.
- Use of live vaccines should be avoided while a patient is being treated with this medicine.
