Olanzapine
  • Olanzapine is a potent antipsychotic drug. It affects certain chemicals in the brain and helps in bringing about a change in thought and perception. It is used to treat a variety of mental disorders.
  • Olanzapine is used to treat psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children at least 13 years old.
Uses
  • Olanzapine is used to treat schizophrenia. It may also be used alone or with other medicines (eg, lithium or valproate) to treat mania or mixed episodes that is part of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness).
  • Olanzapine may also be used together with fluoxetine to treat depression that is a part of bipolar disorder, and depression in patients who received other antidepressants that did not work well.

  •  Increase in body fat and cholesterol
  •  Dizziness
  •  Uncontrolled muscle movements
  •  Chest pain
  •  Dry mouth
  •  Running nose and cough

  •  Change in personality
Precautions / Concerns
  • This medicine should not be used to treat behavioral problems in older adult patients who have dementia or Alzheimer&#39;s disease.
  • Use of Alcohol is not recommended while you are taking Olanzapine. 
  • Use of Olanzapine may increase the risk of high blood sugar levels in patients who are diabetic or are exposed to the risk factors.
  • Olanzapine is likely to cause problems with movements and muscular disorders. 
  • Olanzapine is likely to cause suicidal thoughts in patients suffering from Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders. 
  • Olanzapine is likely to cause changes in the levels of cholesterol and fats in the body.
  • Olanzapine is likely to position based decrease in blood pressure especially during the start of therapy. It should be given very carefully to patients who have an active disease of the heart and valves. 
  • Olanzapine is likely to cause a decrease in blood cell count including white blood cells and overall count. 
  • Olanzapine is likely to cause changes in perception, thoughts and might affect brain centrally controlled movements of muscles.
