Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin. It occurs as a white or slightly yellow crystal or powder with a slight acidic taste. It is an antiscorbutic product. On exposure to light, it gradually darkens. In the dry state, it is reasonably stable in air, but in solution it rapidly oxidizes. Ascorbic acid (vitamin c) is freely soluble in water; sparingly soluble in alcohol; insoluble in chloroform, in ether, and in benzene. The chemical name of ascorbic acid (vitamin c) is L-ascorbic acid (vitamin c)

Uses
  • Vitamin C is recommended for the prevention and treatment of scurvy.
  • Symptoms of mild deficiency may include faulty bone and tooth development, gingivitis, bleeding gums, and loosened teeth. Febrile states, chronic illness, and infection (pneumonia, whooping cough, tuberculosis, diphtheria, sinusitis, rheumatic fever, etc.) increase the need for ascorbic acid (vitamin c).
Side Effects

Less common or rare- with high doses

  •  Diarrhea
  •  dizziness or faintness (with the injection only)
  •  flushing or redness of skin
  •  headache
  •  increase in urination (mild)
  •  nausea or vomiting
  •  stomach cramps
Precautions / Concerns
  • Diabetics, patients prone to recurrent renal calculi, those undergoing stool occult blood tests, and those on sodium-restricted diets or anticoagulant therapy should not take excessive doses of vitamin C over an extended period of time.
  • Too-rapid intravenous injection is to be avoided.
  • Diabetics taking more than 500 mg vitamin C daily may obtain false readings of their urinary glucose test.
Caprylic triglyceride
Allantoin
Allantoin is a skin protectant which works as a moisturizer and relieves minor skin irritations.
Uses
Allantoin is used in the treatment of excessive skin dryness.
Side Effects
Skin irritation, burning sensation and sensitivity to light.
Precautions / Concerns
Avoid if patients are allergic to Allantoin or any other ingredients. Consult with your doctor in pregnancy and lactation.
Salicylic Acid
  • Salicylic acid is a keratolytic (peeling agent). Salicylic acid causes shedding of the outer layer of skin.
  • It treats pimples (acne) by penetrating into the skin and killing acne-causing bacteria. It additionally reduces oil production in the skin, replenishes acne-prone skin, and it also keeps your pores open.

 

Uses

Salicylic acid topical (for the skin) is used in the treatment of acne, dandruff, seborrhea, or psoriasis, and to remove corns, calluses, and warts.

  • Erythema (skin redness)

 

Precautions / Concerns
  • This medicine should not be used to treat genital warts, warts on the face, warts with hair growing from them, warts in the nose or mouth, moles, or birthmarks.
  • It makes your skin sensitive towards sunlight. Use protective measures like sunscreen or wear protective clothing. 
  • Inform your doctor if you notice unusual dryness, redness and peeling of the skin.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or irritated skin.
Glycerol

Glycerol works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, which makes
the stool soft and easier to pass.
Glycerol is the pure chemical product and its commercial product is called glycerin.
Glycerin is needed to produce glycerol
Glycerol is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste. It is viscous at room
temperature and non-toxic in low concentrations.
Glycerol can influence immune reactions in the body through histamines,
increased antibody production and by enhancing immune cell activity and is
therefore classified as an allergen. In the blood, glycerol can increase blood pressure
by preferentially attracting the water from tissues into plasma and lymph. In
nephrons, glycerol can increase urine volume by preventing water resorption.

Uses

Suppositories of glycerol can act as laxatives since they can irritate anal mucosa.
Glycerol usage in the pharmaceutical industry is to improve smoothness and taste. It
is used in the creation of tablets so that they are easy to swallow. The coating can
disintegrate within the body. Cough lozenges often use glycerol to give a sweet taste.

Side Effects

Common side effect with the use of glycerol is dehydration

Precautions / Concerns

It is usually taken once a day as needed for up to 2 weeks. Take it exactly as
prescribed by the doctor.
Take it atleast 2 hours after taking other medicines, as it may interfere with the
absorption of other medicines.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of stomach disorders such as appendicitis
or a blockage in your bowel.

Aloe Vera Extract
  • Aloe medications can be taken by mouth or applied to the skin. It has become a popular herbal remedy that was used to help treat everything from skin issues to digestive problems. 
  • It contains antioxidants, enzymes, Vitamins A and C, and it is highly anti- inflammatory.
Uses
  • It can help treat burns and wounds, acne and dry skin. Aloe extract cream might reduce redness, scaling, itching and inflammation caused by mild to moderate psoriasis. Applying a cream containing aloe extract might help lesions heal sooner. The enzymes in it can also help exfoliate the skin to make it smoother
  • Aloe seems to be able to speed wound healing by improving blood circulation through the area and preventing cell death around a wound.
  • It also appears that aloe gel has properties that are harmful to certain types of bacteria and fungi.
Side Effects
  • Some research suggests that aloe might lower blood sugar. 
  • Do not take aloe latex if you have haemorrhoids. High doses of aloe latex have been linked to kidney failure and other serious conditions.
  • Taking aloe latex or aloe whole-leaf extract by mouth is POSSIBLY UNSAFE at any dose.
Precautions / Concerns
  • Whether oral use of aloe latex is effective at treating constipation is unclear. While it acts as a laxative, aloe latex can also cause abdominal cramps and diarrhoea.
  • Unprocessed aloe latex contains chemicals that appear to have the potential to cause cancer, and processed aloe latex might have cancer- causing compounds.
  • Taking 1 gram a day of aloe latex for several days can cause kidney damage and might be fatal.
Isopropyl Alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol belongs to the class of medications called as antibacterial disinfectants. It acts by killing the bacteria thereby preventing the infection.
Uses
Isopropyl Alcohol is used to prevent infections. & As a biological specimen preservative
Side Effects
Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, Allergic Reactions,burning, stinging, or a cold feeling where the medicine is applied.

Propylene Glycol

  • Propylene Glycol is a lubricating agent used for the temporary relief of eye irritation caused by dryness of the eyes.
Uses
  •  Propylene Glycol is used in the treatment of dry eyes.
  •  It stabilizes the natural tear film and maintains necessary lubrication so your eyes don’t get dry and irritated.
  •  Propylene glycol is also used as moisturizer in cosmetic products and as a dispersant in fragrances.
Side Effects
  •  Common side effects of Propylene Glycol
  •  Application site reactions (burning, irritation, itching and redness),
  •  Blurred vision

  • This medicine is considered safe for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women.
