Isoniazid, also called isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH). Isoniazid is an antibiotic. It works by killing the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. The most important drug in the therapy of tuberculosis


 

Isoniazid is used to treat tuberculosis (TB) or prevent its return (reactivation). It may be given alone, or in combination with other medicines, to treat TB or to prevent its return (reactivation).  Tuberculosis can become resistant to treatment if isoniazid is used alone. 

•  Peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of feet and hand),
•  Increased liver enzymes,
•  Hepatitis (viral infection of liver),
•  Jaundice
•  dizziness

• You should not use isoniazid if you have active liver disease, or if you have taken isoniazid in the past and it caused liver problems, fever, chills, joint pain, or severe allergic reaction.
• Serious and sometimes fatal liver problems may occur during treatment with isoniazid or after you stop taking this medicine, especially if you are between the ages of 35 and 65. Your liver function may need to be checked every month while you are taking this medicine.
• Tell your doctor immediately if you experience vision changes, loss of appetite, tiredness, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, yellow skin or eyes or dark-colored urine.
