Atenolol is in a class of medications called beta blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.

• Atenolol is used for lowering high blood pressure and relieving chest pain caused due to the reduced blood flow to the heart. It is also used for treating other complications associated with heart and blood vessels. 
• Atenolol is also used to help prevent chest pain and to decrease the severity of heart attacks .

• drowsiness

• nausea
• diarrhea
• Some side effects can be serious:
• shortness of breath
• swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
• weight gain
• fainting

• It may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
• It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
• Do not stop taking Atenolol suddenly as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly, thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
