Febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid in your body. A build-up of uric acid
can cause gout symptoms. It works by causing less uric acid to be produced by the
body.
Febuxostat is used to lower hyperuricemia (high uric acid in the blood) in patients
with gout who have been treated
Abdominal pain
Blurred vision
Chest discomfort
Fast heartbeat
Itching or rash
Pale skin
Yellow colored eyes or skin
Decreased interest in sexual intercourse
Unexpected weight gain or loss
Throat irritation
It should be started at low doses and increase gradually. It is not recommended in
the patients with the known history of allergy.
Gout flares may occur after initiation of the treatment due to change in the serum
uric acid levels. Discontinue the treatment until the symptoms completely subsided.
This medicine in not recommended in the patients with ischemic heart disease due
to the risk of cardiovascular thromboembolic events like myocardial infarction,
stroke.
This medicine is known to cause liver failure. Obtain baseline of liver function tests
before initiation of the treatment.
This medicine should be used with caution in the patients with severe kidney injury
(CrCl less than 30 ml/min).
This medicine is not recommended for use in the patients with asymptomatic
hyperuricemia.
